Tuesday

Normal Tuesday. Jason at work. Melissa at work – although I had 3 meetings today, which is unusual! And made for a busy (and late!) day. Girls were at Nana’s house. They got to go shopping for stuff for Aunt Jenna’s shower.

I came home from work to the girls trying to brush Daddy’s hair – and “giving him shots to keep him healthy.”  Can you tell we just had Claire’s check-up, which involved some vaccinations?

While dinner was coming together, managed to snag some video of the girls praying with their new prayer sticks from FamilyLive! Unfortunately, what I got on video doesn’t really seem like they’re praying. I hadn’t acted fast enough to start when they were first praying. So, what you DON’T see is them thanking God for the beautiful weather, and to keep us all healthy, and then they start praying for their friends.  Both of them are very good at saying their prayers. I feel I have at least been teaching them something meaningful!

Dinner was some very interesting hamburgers made using a Kraft Fresh Take kit.  Good, but the cheese didn’t sit completely well with me, as is becoming “normal”. Both Maggie & Claire wanted “more”, which is unusual.  They normally will say “don’t like it.” for anything we make.

Michelle called as we were headed to bed. Looks like we’re going to have a house guest Friday night! :)

Mixbook Deal

Ok, so remember how I was telling all of you about Mixbook the other day? And about how easy to use and awesome it is? :) Of course, you do.

Well, I just received notice that they’re having a sale on their custom cards.

Just like their photobook service, you can do cards and calendars on their site, too. And it’s the same editing interface as the photobooks, so you have the same flexibility, same everything.  Seriously – these are well done.  Their cards also have the option for you to print double-sided.   We received these from two different people this year and – let me tell you – these are high quality cards. The cardstock is of a heavier weight and they look professionally done.  My friends who sent them say they have received a ton of compliments on them.  We didn’t send Christmas cards this year (planning on Valentine’s cards instead), but Mixbook is definitely where I am planning to spend my money.

But what’s the sale? Save 30% off cards at Mixbook!  Ok, here are the details:  Between now and January 1st, 2012, you can save 30% off New Year’s and Thank You cards with coupon code CARDSAVE30  (code valid from December 29, 2011 04:00am PST until January 1, 2012 11:59pm PST. Cannot be combined with other coupons, vouchers, Groupons or applied after an order has been placed. Taxes, shipping and handling will apply. No adjustments on previous purchases).

Enjoy! These would make GREAT cards for Thank You cards throughout the year or if you want to maybe make a gift for next year. (I used scenic photos I had taken to make a pack of thank you cards for my husband’s grandmother one year. She loved them!).

Our Family History

Just finished another photobook on Mixbook.  This is by far the easiest site to use for digital scrapbooking. It does not require that you download any software, there are a ton of embellishments waiting for you to use. Or you can upload things you have purchased online (.png format) and use those.  Seriously. It can’t get any easier.  If you are so inclined, you can use an outside program and upload finished pages, but… it’s just not necessary.

And then the final product: awesome.  I now have an 11×8 hardcover book, stitch-bound (my criteria!) that will keep for years. My only critique is that I prefer a matte cover, instead of glossy. And you can’t combine coupon codes on your order. :(  [UPDATE March 27, 2012: Mixbook has now changed their binding to GLUE binding. And they did not tell their users when they made the switch!]

My latest project: a family history book for dummies. And those dummies would be my family. :) I wanted to create a book just about Our Direct Line. No residual descendants, etc. While I may want to know the names and dates of every generation, my brother does not. And I wanted to combine the genealogy research with the pictures I’ve gathered. Enter: a photobook.  And where do I go? My trusted Mixbook. Enjoy!

Flashback 10 Years: My Memories of 9/11

I thought I would take a moment and write down my memories of September 11, 2001… 10 years ago today.

It was a little after 7:45am CT and I had just gotten out of the shower… I was getting ready to head to my Media Communications class at Harper Community College in Palatine, IL. I walked into my bedroom and on TV was news reports of a massive fire in the north tower of the World Trade Center.

Empire State Building after being hit by a bomber in 1945

Empire State Building - 1945

Immediately, I flashed to images I had seen of the fire after a plane crashed into the Empire State Building back in 1945. Little did I know, not only was I right to remember that, but this time it would be worse, MUCH worse.

After sitting on my bed watching the news coverage, at 8:02 am I witnessed second plane crash into the World Trade Center, this time it was the South Tower. That was.. well, staggering. Did I mention my parents were at O’Hare waiting to board a plane to fly to Las Vegas for their 20th wedding anniversary?

I did not want to be late for class, and I wanted to make sure I got a parking space at school, so I headed out. But I didnt want to miss anything. So, I quickly grabbed my Sony Watchman portable black and white TV. I drove to school listening to WGN (I think). After arriving in the parking lot, I sat in my car and watched my portable TV. At this point, smoke was billowing from the two towers and reports of an attack on the Pentegon were starting to roll in. I watched as the first tower fell at 8:59.

A Tower Falls

I headed into class and sat in the empty classroom watching my little TV. I heard the ESL class across the hallway on the other side of our classroom trailer talking about the events.  I walked over to the doorway and with a shaky voice told them the first tower had fallen.

People started ariving for class and needless to say we didnt have class that day. Our teacher wheeled in a TV and we watched news coverage for the remainder of class. At one point one of the students stood up, whispered to the teacher, and quickly left. His girlfriends mother was in one of the towers… we later found out she survived. We all left class, and I headed home. I later found out classes had been cancelled for the remainder of the day.

Early afternoon mom and dad came home from the airport. With all planes being grounded indefinitely, they were not going to be getting to Las Vegas that day, or any day in the near future. While in the airport, they met a couple from Buffalo, New York who were headed home, but stranded with no rental cars available. Mom and dad asked them to come spend the night at our house until they could get home. Eventually, they were able to rent a car and drive back to Buffalo.

The next few days were some of the most sobering, yet quiet days you will ever hear… there were few, if any,  planes in the sky for the next few days. Seeing an airplane flying over a city would not be the same ever again.

We forgot Fiona!

When Jason and I made our “rules” for our Challenge, we forgot about our cat, Fiona. While we do have plenty of food and litter, I’m not sure how long it will last, so I believe that will need to be added to our “essentials” list.

Silly cat.

This is actually going to be quite fun.

No Spending Challenge

Jason and I have decided to take on a No Spending Challenge for the month of June. Now, obviously, we do have to spend some money, so there are some rules (or exceptions, if you want to call them that).

Only essential spending is allowed. This includes:

  • Gas
  • Regular bills (mortgage, utilities, etc.)
  • Essential groceries (Dairy, Eggs, Fresh Fruits & Vegetables & our regular organic meat order)
  • AND anything purchased with gift cards we already have does not count

Yep. That’s it.  This starts June 1st and I’ve decided to catalog it here, since some might want to see if we can do it. :)

MLB Realignment

There are some whispers that MLB is investing the possibility of contracting the Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays. Both have horrible stadiums, little hope of getting new homes, and small fan bases. If this did happen, what do they do with the divisions? Here’s my proposal: (continue reading…)

What I Would Do With $312 Million

Tonight’s Mega-Millions jackpot is projected to be worth $312 million dollars. That’s a STAGGERING amount of money, and it got me thinking: What would I do with $312 million if I won? I would take the 26 year payout of the full amount, not the $198 million lump sum. Here’s break down of how i’d spend it….

  • Pay “Uncle Sam” and the IRS (about $109,200,000)
  • Pay the state of Illinois (about $15,600,000)
  • 15% to church and charity ($46,800,000)
    • Yes Roger, you can get your new gym for the school
  • Pay off all of the houses in our immediate family (about $500,000)
    • brothers, sisters, parents, and grandparents only
    • you have to draw a line somewhere, or EVERYONE will want to get paid
  • $200,000 Annuity for Each Niece and Nephew as well as Maggie, and Claire ($2,000,000)
    • Payed out over 20 years starting at age 25
  • Land and House in central Florida ($3,000,000)
    • 20+ acres
    • Main house, plus 1 or 2 guest houses
  • House Boat ($300,000)
    • Just fun to have
  • RV ($750,000)
    • After the girls have started college
    • Melissa and I would love to travel the county

After all of that, there would be $133,850,000 left over. That’s $100,000 of “spending money” for traveling, food, taxes, and other expenditures for the next 1,338.5 years!. Or, $1 million per year for the next 133.85 years. Either way, I’m pretty sure it would be safe to say we could retire comfortably.
